Sen. John Fetterman stunned the political class this week by breaking with his party and voting against a Senate war powers resolution that would have forced President Trump to seek congressional authorization before continuing strikes on Iran. The motion failed 47–53, and Fetterman stood nearly alone among Democrats in arguing that national security and decisive action matter more than partisan reflexes.
Patriots should applaud a lawmaker willing to put country over caucus, not the other way around. Fetterman told television hosts he found the president’s strikes justified and said he won’t reflexively join Democrats who posture against force while leaving America vulnerable.
Congress also moved to call out the true culprit in the region: the House approved a measure affirming that Iran is the world’s preeminent state sponsor of terror, a label that reflects decades of brutal behavior and proxy warfare. That vote sent the right message that weakness and moral equivalence will not stand in the face of Tehran’s aggression.
Meanwhile, the hand-wringing from some in the Democratic caucus has looked like cheap political theater — more about scoring headlines than protecting Americans. The failed Senate effort showed the cost of putting process before peril: when seconds count, dithering and grandstanding from the left only ties Congress’ hands and emboldens our enemies.
Even Vice President Kamala Harris’s recent comments, which were dissected on Saturday in America, have exposed the emptiness of Democratic outrage; she urges de-escalation and caution while many on her side reflexively attack any use of force, leaving voters to wonder if politics trumps security.
If Senator Fetterman’s break with party orthodoxy teaches anything, it’s that true leadership answers to the nation, not to the noise machine. The moment demands Americans rally behind clear-eyed strength, hold Congress accountable, and back leaders who will defend our people and our allies rather than scoring cheap political points.
