News outlets have reported that 36 Republican House members have voiced their opposition to a deal between Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden to lift the nation’s debt ceiling. This should come as no surprise, as it was made clear by the most ardent conservatives that they would never back down on this issue. This list of rebels contains the most conservative members of the House, including Lauren Boebert, Ken Buck, Byron Donalds, and Vern Buchanan.

Each of these members released a statement of their own. They all agreed that the deal is not keeping the very American values that they fight to protect. Republican Representative Boebert said, “The debt limit deal is a bad deal for America. As the bill is now currently presented my vote will be NO, tomorrow’s anti-deal. Until then, I hope the House will either amend it or kill it entirely.”

Representative Buck stated, “This is just a bad deal. I won’t vote to add $4 trillion more to the deficit within the next 20 months. This is a plan for continuing the bipartisan bankruptcy in Washington D.C.”
Representative Donalds exclaimed, “This bill keeps all of Joe Biden’s policy, all of Joe Biden’s spending intact. This bill does nothing for the Green New Deal subsidies that are going to cripple our electric grid. To my Republican colleagues, vote no, vote no. And do the right thing. And let’s go find a better deal.”
Finally, Representative Buchanan declared, “Nobody wants to default on our debt, but neither can we afford to keep spending money we don’t have. Very disappointed to see this bill increase the national debt by $4 trillion in half as many years and do very little to actually get our fiscal house in order. I will be voting NO. Enough is enough!”
It is clear that Kevin McCarthy has done a poor job of holding the line on this topic. He needs to understand that fiscal responsibility is critical, and it seems as if he is becoming just another establishment Republican willing to give in to the Democrats’ dangerous policies. Senator Rand Paul also weighed in on the issue, saying, “This is yet another bad deal negotiated by weak Republicans who are afraid to stand up to Democrats. Instead of giving in to progressive spending, Republicans need to get serious about tackling our nation’s fiscal issues.” If more politicians don’t step up and take a stand, we will continue down this dangerous path of unsustainable spending and skyrocketing debt.
