The Texas Tribune, some liberal rag out of Austin, Texas, is blabbing about how Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has gone and signed three tough bills aimed at dealing with the immigration crisis on the Mexican border.

The most controversial bill, Senate Bill 4, basically makes it a state crime to enter Texas from Mexico anywhere but a lawful port of entry. They’re not playing around. Then, Abbott signs another bill to strengthen the Texas borders with $1.54 billion for barriers and security measures. There’s also a bill that increases the mandatory prison term for smuggling illegal immigrants from two years to 10.
Part of the crime-fighting bill gives local law enforcement the power to arrest illegal immigrants. That’s how serious Abbott and the Lone Star State are about this.
There’s already a bunch of left-wing organizations planning to challenge these bills in court. You’ve got the American Civil Liberties Union leading the charge, along with some Democrats and Mexican government officials.
The federal government isn’t doing much on this issue, of course. Customs and Border Protection data show that illegal immigration numbers are still through the roof. And surprise, surprise again, the White House and its Democratic allies are whining about these bills and threatening to take legal action.
When the feds fail to enforce the law, it’s up to the states to pick up the slack. And Greg Abbott is leading the way. It’s about time someone did.
Abbott’s sending a message, and it’s time for the other states along the border to join him. Because when it comes down to it, the Biden administration chose to let this crisis happen. And if they don’t like the fact that states are finally doing something about it, well, that’s their problem.
