The political landscape has taken a bizarre twist in recent years, with a new game emerging among the left: a hysterical hunt for Nazis. This peculiar version of “Where’s Waldo?” has politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) taking center stage, and it raises the question: Why are so many on the left seeing Nazis under every bed? The world moved on from World War II over 80 years ago, but apparently, that lesson has been lost on many Democrats, who seem to find Nazis lurking around every corner and in every corner of the globe, including Ukraine, Israel, and beyond.
In this era of exaggerated accusations, Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow Squad members have taken a particular loathing to the Jewish state. Their antics have culminated in a voting record that includes rejection of a nonbinding resolution stipulating that Israel is not a racist or apartheid state. It seems that for these self-proclaimed progressives, even harmless affirmations of Israel’s existence are deemed too much to bear. This is merely the tip of the iceberg, as the Squad’s denouncements of Israel only grow louder and more ridiculous, with members claiming Israel is guilty of genocide while eagerly bolstering Hamas, which is known for its own tragic history of intolerance towards Jews.

The double standards in the left’s narrative become even more glaring when Democrats like Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) chime in to chastise their own party members for these anti-Jewish sentiments. Deutch made it clear that to advocate for the dismantling of the one Jewish state in the world is purely antisemitic. However, history indicates that left-wing anti-Israel radicalism continues unabated, with incidents of antisemitism skyrocketing to alarming levels—700 percent to be precise—on college campuses post-Hamas attacks. This isn’t just political rhetoric; real harm is done, and it’s alarming to see who orchestrates this hate from the sidelines.
Amidst this chaos, AOC takes it upon herself to play paragon of Jewish virtue. Ironically, she accuses conservatives of being Nazis—merely for gestures and optics—while she steadfastly refuses to take responsibility for the escalating antisemitism rallying under her party’s banner. Her attempts to “Jewsplain” antisemitism to the Anti-Defamation League are akin to a firefighter igniting a blaze and then claiming expertise in the field. The woman is evidently baffled by the idea of true antisemitism, yet delivers her own unique brand of bigotry unchecked.
To clarify, Ocasio-Cortez may not be donning a swastika armband anytime soon, but her alliances and actions speak volumes. By supporting policies that dismantle the Jewish state, advocating for cuts to defensive funding, and standing shoulder to shoulder with openly antisemitic movements, she is, whether she acknowledges it or not, in league with those who harbor intentions far from benevolent.
It’s a tangled web of deception in which many on the left are ensnared, flaunting a self-righteous indignation while energetically stoking the fires of hate against their own ideal targets. Those who fail to see this hypocrisy might still learn a lesson or two from history about the very real dangers of these narratives. While the left champions itself as a refuge for the oppressed, it betrays a critical misunderstanding of real antisemitism and a dangerous dismissal of the consequences meted out by the very rhetoric they perpetuate.
