Senator Bernie Sanders seems to have found a new target in the fallout of Donald Trump’s re-election victory: the Democratic Party establishment. The self-proclaimed champion of the working class hasn’t held back in directing his ire toward those he considers out of touch with the average American, which in today’s day and age seems to be just about everyone in the establishment. Apparently realizing that his dreams of socialism might be better championed outside the Democrats, Sanders threw out the idea of endorsing independent candidates instead.
In an email to his supporters, Sanders argued that the American public is well aware of the “rigged” systems in both the economic and political spheres. He contended that the wealthy are getting wealthier at the expense of the struggling masses who just want a fair chance. One has to wonder if he really understands the American dream and what truly empowers people. After all, is it really “rigged” when hard work and entrepreneurship are still valued?
The senator, whose bid for the presidency years ago faced “rigging” allegations—allegations conveniently ignored by the mainstream media—accused the Democrats of clinging desperately to the status quo. While Trump has been vocal about tearing down the old structures, it appears Sanders would rather stand on the sidelines and yell at the players than actually step onto the field himself. The irony here is thick; a guy who claims to be for the people is now questioning the capability of the party he still backs to learn from its failures.
Sanders managed to fit in a somber warning about the future under a Trump-led government, suggesting that it’s the working class that will ultimately suffer from increased inequality and a rise in “bigoted” rhetoric. Meanwhile, one might argue that the real bigotry lies in the party’s rejection of the very people Sanders claims to serve. The disconnect between their rhetoric and the real-life challenges faced by blue-collar workers is glaring.

Despite all this, the senator ended his email with an almost comical plea for action, encouraging supporters to voice their concerns. It seems every political analyst knows what’s coming: the usual calls for reforms that never see the light of day. Will this lead to the formation of a new political party? Perhaps. But one thing is sure; if Sanders can’t reign in his own party, the chances that a new party would actually bridge that gap seem slim.
Just hours after Trump’s decisive win, Sanders utilized social media to express his discontent with how Democrats have handled the situation. What he failed to acknowledge is that many within the Democratic party have been drowning in their own hubris, desperately clinging to outdated ideologies while ignoring the voices of working-class Americans. Now, as Sanders aligns himself with Trump on certain issues, one thing is clear: the landscape is shifting, and the infighting among the left is only beginning.
