Biden and Trump Clinch Nominations Amid Protests; Key Races Unfold in Five States

Voters in five states took part in important elections on Tuesday, casting their ballots in congressional and judicial races. Kentucky and Oregon voters also participated in presidential primaries.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump secured the necessary number of delegates to become their party’s presumptive nominees shortly after Super Tuesday. However, both candidates faced protest votes against their nominations. The “uncommitted” option in multiple states cut into Biden’s vote margins, raising concerns for his November rematch against Trump. Trump, on the other hand, saw his margins hurt by former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who had dropped out of the race more than two months ago.

In Kentucky, all six House districts were up for grabs, with Biden and Trump appearing on their party’s respective ballots. The “uncommitted” option on ballots cut into Biden’s vote totals, while Trump faced competition from Haley and five other Republicans, including Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL).

Georgia also had key races, including the open 3rd District seat and Democratic primaries with multiple candidates vying for nominations. Incumbent Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA) faced challengers in the 6th District, and Rep. David Scott’s (D-GA) seat faced six challengers in the Democratic primary.

In Oregon, all six House seats were up for grabs. Biden and Trump were largely expected to win their primary races, though Biden had to compete with an “uncommitted” option on the ballot once again.

In Idaho’s 2nd District, Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) sought a 14th term, facing challenges from two Republicans. Additionally, California voters took part in a special election to replace former GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Overall, the elections in these states showed a range of candidates and issues at play, with various primaries and competitive races indicating the potential for significant changes to come.
