The revelation that former President Joe Biden allowed foreigners to apply for asylum appointments through an app is enough to make even the most patient conservative roll their eyes. The app, known as CBP One, was designed to let would-be asylum seekers skip the traditional approach at our southern border and schedule appointments with U.S. Customs and Border Protection instead. It became a tool to facilitate the entry of hundreds of thousands of individuals into the country during Biden’s tenure—a move that many, including Vice President J.D. Vance, have flagged as one of the most understated scandals of the modern political era.
As if the border crisis could not get any worse, the day President Donald Trump was inaugurated, the app was promptly shut down. In under an hour, the landscape changed for those who thought they had a smooth sailing path to America. Reports surfaced showing that individuals who had lined up for their scheduled appointments were left in total disarray, with one emotional would-be asylum seeker reduced to tears in Ciudad Juarez upon hearing the app had ceased functioning. Perhaps this break in technology was a blessing in disguise, as it brought attention to the chaos that Biden administration policies had allowed to fester.

Even though the closure of CBP One represented a step in the right direction, the situation along the southern border is still dire. Border Patrol agents noted that illegal immigrants continue to flood in, and the cartels are as active as ever, effortlessly bypassing the gaps in what was supposed to be a secure barrier. If the wall was supposed to be the ultimate solution, then the reality paints a much uglier picture—a porous border that allows anyone with an agenda to waltz in, unchecked.
Trump has made it clear through a flurry of executive orders that closing the border is a top priority. However, the challenges ahead are monumental, requiring all available resources to address the tidal wave of illegal crossings that have become the new normal since the Obama era. Estimates suggest that even with stricter enforcement, millions—if not tens of millions—of people will have entered the U.S. unlawfully or gained entry through the dubious asylum paths laid out under Biden’s watch.
As officials scramble to manage this unprecedented crisis, they must contend with a well-oiled media machine that thrives on portraying sob stories of migrants. Unfortunately, this media-driven narrative aims to guilt-trip American citizens into accepting policies that compromise their own safety and prosperity. The minute a citizen raises a concern about national security, they are bombarded with images meant to evoke sympathy towards those who chose to bypass legal channels. Democratic elites may see this as simple humanitarianism; conservative Americans simply see a need to secure their homeland from both foreign threats and ideological domestic enemies. The imperative to protect one’s borders has never been clearer, and the complexities of this crisis demand that stubborn resolve that is often lacking among the Washington establishment.
