Biden Holds Firm on Asylum Restrictions Despite Lower Border Crossings

The White House made it crystal clear that President Biden has no plans to pull back his executive order restricting asylum applications. This comes even as the numbers at the southern border are beginning to resemble those seen during the Trump administration, a time when many conservatives enjoyed a sense of order and accountability. The mainstream media might have wanted to make a big deal about this shift, but the administration is simply doubling down on its existing policies.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre pointed out that Customs and Border Protection recorded the lowest number of encounters with illegal immigrants last month since September 2020. Apparently, while actual crossings have dipped to levels reminiscent of pre-2021, Biden is still holding firmly to policies that oomph up bureaucracy rather than facilitate genuine progress. Encounters in August were a staggering 68% lower than just a month earlier, and daily encounters have plummeted by 50% since the executive action. Some might say this is a sign to reconsider, but the Biden administration appears to have interpreted it as an invitation to kick back and relax.

Despite the encouraging numbers, Biden’s executive order remains firmly in place until a flood of illegal crossings crosses the magic number of 1,500 a day. Last month, the average daily encounters hovered around 2,000. So, ladies and gentlemen, it seems there’s always an excuse ready to keep that border wide open, especially while blaming congressional Republicans for their own inaction. A ‘bipartisan border deal’ may have been floated, but the finger-pointing and blame game continue.

Jean-Pierre didn’t stop there; she elaborated on how Republicans have been throwing roadblocks in front of any efforts to enact real change. It’s a classic Washington tactic—when all else fails, blame the other party. According to her, Biden’s administration is heroically trying to maintain border security “without the help of congressional Republicans.” How noble. And let’s not forget that in a supposed democracy, it’s the Republicans who are the villains pulling the strings behind a nonexistent bipartisan effort.

As the November elections loom, immigration and border security have skyrocketed to the top of voters’ concerns. Vice President Kamala Harris, the administration’s go-to figure for everything related to the southern border, is facing heat for her role in addressing the root causes of migration. With former President Trump and other Republicans criticizing her effectiveness, Harris may find herself in a sticky situation. Polls suggest that voters trust Trump far more on immigration issues—something that certainly doesn’t bode well for the current administration as they navigate rocky waters leading up to Election Day.
