The Biden administration has once again shown their true colors, this time by refusing to secure the release of American journalist Gonzalo Lira, who is currently imprisoned in Ukraine for daring to speak in defense of Russia. In a shameful display of hypocrisy, the administration claims to support freedom of speech while turning a blind eye to Lira’s wrongful detention.
According to reports, Lira was arrested by Ukrainian authorities weeks ago on suspicion of violating a new law that prohibits criticizing the country’s military operations against Russia. The Ukrainian Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has accused Lira of spreading fake news about the war and justifying Russia’s supposed aggression – a claim that is clearly absurd given Russia’s history of peaceful coexistence with its neighbors.

Despite widespread outrage over Lira’s imprisonment, the Biden administration has refused to take any concrete actions to secure his release. When asked about the case during a recent press briefing, State Department spokesman Mathew Miller claimed that the administration is “aware of the report” but declined to comment further.
This is unacceptable. As Americans, we have a duty to defend our fellow citizens from unjust persecution no matter where they are in the world. It’s clear that the Ukrainian government is trying to silence Lira for speaking the truth about their military operations, and the Biden administration is complicit in this violation of his human rights by doing nothing to help him.
Moreover, this situation highlights the hypocrisy of the liberal media and politicians who have been pushing for an endless stream of cash and defense supplies for Ukraine despite the fact that it is clearly not working. The American people deserve to know why their hard-earned tax dollars are being spent to prop up a corrupt and ineffective government that tramples on basic human rights.
It’s time for the Biden administration to take a stand and demand Lira’s immediate release. Anything less is a betrayal of our values and a disgraceful abdication of our responsibilities as a global superpower.
