In a strong and united stand against the Biden administration’s immigration policies, twenty-four Republican governors have come together to demand “honest” and “accurate” information regarding the illegal immigration crisis at the southern border. In a letter addressed to President Joe Biden, these governors blamed his policies for the surge in illegal border crossings and called on him to provide detailed and comprehensive data on the relocation of migrants admitted at the southern border, as well as information on asylum claim timelines, qualification rates, and successful deportations.
With states bearing the brunt of this crisis, the governors highlighted the financial burden placed on them. Analysts estimate that illegal immigration costs the United States at least $150.7 billion annually at the federal, state, and local levels. As a result, states are forced to provide financial, educational, and medical support to migrants entering the country illegally, which is becoming increasingly expensive due to record inflation and the unprecedented influx of migrants.
The situation is not limited to the southern border alone. The governors highlighted a worrying increase in illegal immigration at the northern border as well, with some cases witnessing an alarming 850% rise. Moreover, the issue has now transcended into a public safety concern, as the governors noted that 244 individuals who crossed the border were on the terror watchlist.

Although they did not receive transparency from the Biden administration, the governors raised concerns about the potential infiltration of terrorists and cartels exploiting the porous southern border for heinous activities such as human and narcotics trafficking. They urged the President to address these legitimate fears and uphold his responsibility to protect the nation.
The Republican governors did not hesitate to emphasize that the problem of illegal immigration affects their Democratic colleagues as well. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, a Democrat, referred to the crisis as a “federal crisis of inaction.” Similarly, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, warned of the impending financial tsunami caused by housing over 2,000 migrants in the city.
This joint effort by the Republican governors from Alabama to Wyoming sends a powerful message to the Biden administration. They demand immediate action and transparency, shedding light on the dire consequences of the illegal immigration crisis. It is high time for President Biden to acknowledge the reality and take real and effective steps to secure the border, protect the American people, and relieve the burden on the states.
