Biden Revives Debunked Hoax in Farewell Address at DNC

In a bizarre twist that seems to have forgotten reality altogether, President Joe Biden leveraged the long-debunked “very fine people” hoax during his farewell address at the Democratic National Convention. With the bravado of a magician pulling rabbits out of hats, Biden once again alleged that former President Donald Trump praised neo-Nazis in Charlottesville. Despite the mountain of evidence and countless clarifications from Trump himself, this false narrative has become a Democratic talking point that just won’t die.

The narrative in question revolves around Trump’s remarks following the riot in Charlottesville in August 2017, where he unequivocally condemned neo-Nazis. Biden, however, resurrected this zombie of misinformation in his address, likely hoping it would distract from the reality of his dwindling approval ratings. What’s more amusing is that Biden first introduced this hoax in his 2019 campaign. Fast forward to 2023, and it appears he’s still reading from that same well-worn script, echoing the debunked claims without an ounce of shame.

Efforts to set the record straight have been met with denial from Biden, who, despite being confronted with the truth — including from sources that lean towards the left, like Snopes — clings to the falsehood like a toddler clinging to their blankie. It’s almost comedic how he refuses to acknowledge the truth, even in the face of overwhelming evidence the hoax has been dismissed multiple times: during debates with both Trump and Mike Pence, and even during Trump’s second impeachment trial, where the claim was shot down on national television.

Not only did he fail to address this lingering fallacy, but Biden also stepped up his game by claiming that the Ku Klux Klan paraded about “without hoods” because they considered Trump an ally. This freshly minted embellishment seems to serve a dual purpose: vilifying Trump while simultaneously distracting from the overwhelming presence of pro-Palestinian demonstrators outside the convention, many of whom were visibly waving flags of terrorist organizations like Hamas. It’s a classic move — when your argument is weak, just throw out fearmongering distractions.

Biden’s tenure may conclude just as it began, with him entrenched in a narrative that breeds division and distrust. This orchestrated effort to vilify a political opponent reflects more on Biden’s need to align with an unhappy base rather than on any dispassionate analysis of the facts. The irony is that while Biden attempts to paint his adversaries with a broad brush of hate, he himself should take a long look in the mirror at the chaos, confusion, and conflict his falsehoods have sown in the fabric of American society.
