President Biden’s decision to attend the roundtable, despite not being originally scheduled, was a clear message of support for Israel and a denouncement of anti-Semitism. He stated that the United States would continue to work closely with Israel and its partners to ensure the country’s security and the safety of its citizens. The president went on to reaffirm his commitment to Israel and the Jewish people, both at home and abroad.
White House officials have confirmed that 17 Americans remain unaccounted for, with 22 Americans having lost their lives due to the ongoing conflict. While the specific conditions and locations of the hostages are unknown, efforts are being made to gather more information. The National Security Council believes that the number of hostages held by Hamas is relatively small, but the situation could change over time.
In order to maintain the safety of the hostages, officials have exercised discretion and refrained from providing detailed public updates. There is no information available regarding dialogue with Hamas or the possibility of U.S. military intervention for hostage recovery. However, Representative Cory Mills, an Army veteran, has taken it upon himself to help evacuate Americans from Israel. Drawing on his experience from the Afghanistan withdrawal, Mills has successfully helped 32 Americans leave the country and plans to continue his operations.
Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have also pushed for the evacuation of Americans in Israel. In a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, 146 members of Congress requested the use of all available resources, including chartering flights and military options. Numerous airlines have halted their flights to and from Israel due to the actions of Hamas, making the evacuation process more challenging.
As the efforts to bring home the American hostages continue, the Biden administration remains resolute in their commitment to resolving the crisis and ensuring the safety of all Americans involved.
