Biden Taps Emergency Gas Reserves Amid Soaring Prices, Trump Criticizes Move

Amid President Joe Biden’s struggles to convince the American people that the soaring prices of goods and gas are not a concern, the Biden administration has announced a new plan. The administration declared on Tuesday that it will be releasing one million barrels of gasoline from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve, as reported by the Associated Press. This reserve was created in 2014 under former President Barack Obama in response to Superstorm Sandy, to ensure that the Northeast has a backup supply of gasoline during emergencies.

The release of the gasoline comes at a time when the average national gas price per gallon is $3.60, up six cents from a year ago, according to AAA. The move aims to increase supplies and lower costs for American motorists in the Northeast as demand rises around the Fourth of July holiday. The Energy Department stated that the sale aims to “lower costs for American families and consumers” and is part of President Biden’s broader plan to lower gas and energy costs.

Former President Donald Trump criticized the decision, suggesting that Biden is using this strategy to lower prices at the pump just before the election because of an inability to properly manage energy resources. Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s handling of energy policies, stating that “everything he’s done has been very bad for our country.”

The decision to release the gasoline from the reserves raises concerns about the region’s safety net in the event of another natural disaster. The move leaves the Northeast vulnerable without a backup supply shortly after the largest earthquake to ever hit the region. Critics worry that the release of the reserves may be motivated more by political ambitions than addressing the actual concerns of everyday Americans.

As criticism and concerns continue to mount on the decision, it remains to be seen whether the release of the gasoline from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve will have the intended impact on gas prices and public opinion.
