The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees website is making some big claims about asylum in the United States, touting it as a form of protection that allows individuals to stay in the country instead of being sent back to a place where they are afraid of persecution.
That all sounds well and good in theory, but the reality on the ground is a whole different story. The Biden administration’s open border policies have turned the southern border into a circus, with hundreds of thousands of people flooding the country illegally. The system is so overwhelmed that it might take the feds a whopping eight years to even figure out if someone is eligible for asylum. Yes, you read that right, eight whole years!

A Colombian woman who crossed illegally into the U.S. was given an ICE check-in date in New York City for the year 2031. That’s right, she’s supposed to check in with immigration officials a decade from now. This level of incompetence is mind-boggling! Immigration lawyer Matthew Kolken, who represents the woman, was left in disbelief, calling it one of the most shocking things he’s seen in his nearly 30 years of immigration law.
The Biden administration’s backdoor amnesty for anyone who wants to show up at the border is a complete disaster. Asylum protections were meant to save lives, but now they’re being exploited, creating chaos and a free-for-all at the border that serves neither Americans nor legitimate asylum-seekers.
The immigration court backlog in the United States has surpassed 3 million pending cases, reaching crisis levels. Immigration judges are facing an average of 4,500 pending cases each, and the backlog has been growing at an alarming rate. This is creating a massive immigration mess that is overwhelming the system and preventing judges from making any real progress.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, the surge of migrants crossing the border and exploiting the asylum system has caused an unprecedented crisis. Trump-era policies such as the Migrant Protection Protocols and Title 42 were working to ensure orderly processing and cut down on false claims, but Biden and his homeland security secretary decided to toss these rules aside and open the floodgates.
Now, we are dealing with a never-ending surge of people crossing the border, claiming asylum while really just seeking jobs or a “better life.” The Biden administration’s failure to address this crisis is a slap in the face to genuine asylum seekers and to Americans who deserve to have a secure border. It’s time for the chaos to end and for the Biden administration to take real action to secure our borders and protect the integrity of the asylum process.
