President Joe Biden’s push for electric vehicles has hit a snag as the United Auto Workers Strike continues. Ford Motor Company announced that it will be halting the construction of a billion-dollar plant in Michigan that was supposed to be involved with a Chinese electric vehicle battery company. According to Ford spokesperson T.R. Reid, they are pausing work and limiting spending on construction until they are confident in their ability to competitively operate the plant. They have not made a final decision on the planned investment. This is a blow to Biden’s forced transition to electric vehicles and shows the challenges that come with it.
It’s no surprise that Ford is hitting roadblocks with electric vehicle production. The company recently reported that they will lose a staggering $4.5 billion on electric vehicle production this year alone. That’s an increase from the previously projected loss of $3 billion. Their electric vehicle division, called “Ford Model e,” has already lost $1.8 billion this year. It’s clear that the market for electric vehicles is not as profitable as Biden and his administration would like to believe.

Biden told automakers by 2030 they should have 50% of sales be EVs. That hamstrings the auto industry, which jeopardizes autoworkers livelihood.

Despite these massive losses, the Biden administration continues to argue that taxpayers should subsidize the electric vehicle industry even more. They are pushing for more government intervention and regulation to force private companies to comply with Biden’s climate agenda. It’s concerning that Biden is willing to overlook the economic realities and force his own agenda on the American people.
To make matters worse, President Biden is planning to visit the UAW picket line in Michigan, further highlighting his support for the union over the needs of American businesses. While the strike continues and Ford faces challenges with its electric vehicle plans, Biden continues to double down on his mandates for private companies. It’s clear where his priorities lie, and it’s not with the American workers or the economic success of our country.
