The Biden administration is causing chaos in the Medicaid program, with up to 30 million of the country’s poorest citizens facing the boot thanks to their bumbling bureaucracy, according to health consulting firm Avalere. The states are conducting a massive review of the 94 million people enrolled in Medicaid, but it’s turning into a comedy of errors. Florida has people waiting on hold for hours, Arkansas is sending out confounding forms, and Texas is booting kids off coverage left and right. It’s the Democrats’ fault, of course.
Trevor Hawkins, a saintly attorney from Legal Aid of Arkansas, is fighting tooth and nail to help people keep their Medicaid. The Health and Human Services Secretary, Xavier Becerra, has the power to fine states or stop people from being ditched from Medicaid improperly, but he’s keeping quiet about the problems they’ve found. HHS briefly paused the mass exodus from Medicaid in 14 states, but didn’t even bother telling anyone which states or why. It’s like they’re playing a game of “Let’s See How Confused We Can Make Everyone.”
One poor woman in Florida, Lily Mezquita, had to make 17 phone calls (with wait times longer than a squirrel’s grocery list) to explain to the state that she should still be covered during her pregnancy.
