President Joe Biden’s press release recognizing the 12th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting serves as yet another reminder of his administration’s obsession with gun control in the face of mounting evidence that shows these measures do little to actually reduce violence. In a classic Biden move, he issued this statement just before retreating for yet another weekend nap, all while patting himself on the back for supposed progress on gun legislation.
With a bold claim that his administration has somehow miraculously made the country safer, Biden urged Congress to act on more gun reform. This plea comes amid a barrage of school shootings this year alone, totaling 38, many occurring in states boasting stringent gun laws like California and Illinois. Clearly, the logical conclusion that gun control fails to prevent these tragedies has eluded him. Instead, he continues to spout about enhanced background checks and other regulations from his 2022 legislation, which do little more than create more red tape for law-abiding citizens while leaving criminals unfazed.
Biden’s rhetoric about crime statistics under his watch may sound appealing to some, but the reality suggests a different story. The president asserts that homicides are down and crime is falling; however, this contrasts starkly with the lived experiences of many Americans who face rising crime rates in their communities. The root causes of school shootings, such as the troubling profiles of shooters from recent incidents, are conveniently skipped over. It’s apparent that positing blame solely on firearms neglects the underlying issues driving this violence.
The president’s invocation of a “legacy of hope” stemming from Sandy Hook rings hollow in the face of their association with groups like Moms Demand Action. These organizations, heavily funded by billionaire gun control advocates, have attempted to wield their political influence as a means to strip away Second Amendment rights while claiming to act for the greater good. Their initiatives have often proved ineffective at changing the gun laws in a meaningful context, failing to protect individuals while undercutting their freedoms.
