Amidst allegations of misrepresenting program durations and falsely portraying the institution as a nonprofit, the FTC's claims intensify, targeting GCU's handling of doctoral programs. Samuel Levine, leading the charge from the FTC, has accused GCU of distorting costs and program requirements for doctoral degrees. The FTC's pursuit of compensation for consumers and demands to restrain the university have ignited discussions about government overreach.
Yet, the assault on GCU extends beyond the FTC. The Department of Education (DOE) dealt a hefty blow, slapping the university with a $37.7 million fine over alleged misinformation about doctoral program expenses. GCU's President, Brian Mueller, staunchly defends the institution, linking these federal investigations to the DOE's denial of GCU's nonprofit status in 2018. Mueller highlights the DOE's refusal, maintaining GCU's nonprofit classification for federal aid, as a pivotal point in the ongoing conflict.
Despite mounting pressure, GCU remains resolute, vowing to appeal the DOE's staggering fine and vehemently refuting any claims of misleading students. Their response to media queries, notably declining immediate comment to FOX Business, reflects a strategic stance against perceived biased narratives.
