Representative Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) found himself unable to stave off defeat in the 16th Congressional District’s Democrat primary despite his colorful speeches and last-ditch efforts. His defeat marks a significant setback for the “progressive” Squad of far-left lawmakers in the House to which he belonged. It seems not even an unending chorus of alarm bells could save Bowman from his political demise.
Bowman becomes the first squad member ousted by a primary challenger, yet the squad’s troubles do not end there. Representative Cori Bush (D-MO) finds herself in a similar predicament, confronting an intraparty challenge that’s heating up her race by the day. The stakes are high as another progressive darling might be shown the door by disenchanted Democrat voters.

According to Politico, Bush’s opponent, St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell, has gained significant traction. A recent poll reveals the race is now a statistical dead heat, with Bell leading Bush by a hair’s breadth (Bell 43, Bush 42). This is quite the turnaround, given that an earlier poll had Bell lagging 16 points behind Bush. The momentum appears to be firmly on Bell’s side as the August 6 primary approaches.
New DMFI poll in #M001– Rep. Cori Bush district:
Wesley Bell (D) 43
Rep. Cori Bush (D) 42 https://t.co/9BpPJNEkp4— Josh Kraushaar (@JoshKraushaar) June 26, 2024
The Smith-Mellman group’s poll, commissioned by the Democratic Majority for Israel, indicates a narrowing gap that should be deeply concerning for Bush. Given that this poll correctly predicted the outcome of Bowman’s race, it’s a strong indicator that Bush could face the same fate. With groups like the United Democracy Project already spending big to knock out Bowman, they will likely throw their weight behind Bell’s campaign as well.
Much like Bowman, Bush has been blaming outside groups and portraying herself as a victim of political spending in a desperate attempt to rally support. She recently attacked AIPAC and other donors backing her opponent, accusing them of trying to “buy” her district with financial contributions. However, these tactics failed for Bowman and may very well fall flat for Bush, too. After all, it seems voters are growing weary of their performative outrage and empty promises.
Could this be a sign that Democrat voters are finally waking up to the antics of the far-left Squad members? One can certainly hope. Their relentless virtue signaling and hollow rhetoric have worn thin, and it’s about time voters demand more than just grandstanding from their representatives.
