California Democrats recently showcased their steadfast dedication to maintaining the status quo by voting against Vice President Kamala Harris’ “no tax on tips” proposal. This brilliant idea—which, coincidentally, bears a remarkable resemblance to proposals put forth by former President Donald Trump—was shot down without so much as a moment’s discussion.
The proposal had the potential to lighten the tax burden for hard-working individuals in the service industry, allowing bartenders, waiters, and other hospitality workers to keep more of their hard-earned tips by exempting them from state income taxes. But, of course, California Democrats seemed more interested in a political showdown than the financial well-being of their constituents. Instead of working toward a solution, they opted for a classic “ignore it and hope it goes away” strategy.
Is anyone surprised that the @CA_Dem shot this down? These people HATE the average California citizens! https://t.co/1nuEHyJT8e

Kamala Harris’ foray into tax policy appears to lack originality. With a penchant for “borrowing” ideas, she is grasping at straws by lifting Trump-era concepts and attempting to spin them as her own. One might have expected a fresh approach, but instead, democrats appear more inclined to shuffle papers rather than deliver meaningful reforms. In fact, Harris once again highlighted her inability to put forward any substantial policies as she continues to keep her campaign website devoid of any serious conversation.
While Harris was busy outlining her dreams of eliminating federal taxes on tips, that frenzy was not without its critics. Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones, a Republican from San Diego, unleashed a well-deserved tirade against the Democrats for their refusal to even engage in a debate over a proposal that could have benefitted working-class Californians. To suggest that this issue isn’t worthy of discussion is a stunning oversight, especially when considering the state’s high cost of living and the financial struggles of its workforce.
Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh added fuel to the fire by calling out the Democrats for their disregard of the proposal amidst an economy that continues to strain the pocketbooks of California’s service industry employees. While Republican leaders advocate for tax relief measures that can ease the heavy burden on residents, California Democrats seem intent on keeping their heads buried in the sand, unwilling to face the pressing realities that their voters are battling every single day.
