Ahsha Safai, a former ally of Breed and a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, has tossed his hat into the ring, hoping to unseat the incumbent mayor. Joining him is Daniel Lurie, a wealthy heir to the Levi Strauss & Co. fortune, who has also set his sights on the mayoral seat. Aaron Peskin, the President of the Board of Supervisors and a staunch progressive, is pointing the finger at tech billionaires who are pouring money into the campaigns of centrist Democrats. According to Peskin, this influx of big bucks has created a hostile environment for San Francisco’s historic liberal consensus, deterring progressives from entering the race.
As the election year looms, Lurie has wasted no time flexing his financial muscle, raking in a whopping $519,896 between September and December. His hefty war chest has undoubtedly raised eyebrows and rattled cages among the city’s political elite.
Meanwhile, Breed, the city’s first black female mayor, is grappling with a slew of challenges, from the pandemic-induced economic downturn to a devastating surge in drug overdoses. Her leadership has been called into question, with critics branding her as a weak leader struggling to steer the city through these tumultuous times.
In the face of mounting criticism and blame, Peskin remains adamant that there’s still room for a far-left candidate in the mayoral race. Despite the apparent shift toward centrist Democrats, Peskin believes that a progressive candidate can still make a splash in the race and sway voters with their liberal agenda.
