In 2016, former Vice President Dick Cheney threw his weight behind Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, but with a catch that raised eyebrows across the political spectrum. Cheney expressed concerns that Trump “sounds like a liberal Democrat.” This was quite the bombshell, given that the Democrats were likely chuckling harder than schoolchildren at a playground. To them, Trump is closer to Genghis Khan than any of their beloved Snowflakes, making him their worst nightmare wrapped in a red Make America Great Again cap.
It’s hard to fathom how a former vice president could perceive Trump as a liberal when the former reality TV star and billionaire is infamous for his unyielding, no-nonsense rhetoric. After all, Trump isn’t just anti-establishment; he’s practically at war with the entire liberal agenda. Yet, in Cheney’s mind, there was something about Trump’s flamboyant style and occasionally centrist approach that awakened an unsettling feeling, reminding him of the dreaded “L” word.

This sentiment has become an amusing topic among conservatives who might just get a laugh out of Cheney’s misreading of Trump’s intentions. It’s like calling a pit bull a fluffy golden retriever; it just doesn’t add up. Such statements show just how out of touch establishment Republicans continue to be with the grassroots conservatism that propelled Trump into the Oval Office. Cheney may be a legend in his own right, but his grasp on contemporary conservative values seems to have slipped a little, much like Nancy Pelosi trying to navigate a TikTok app.
The mention of “liberal” does indeed conjure a certain image: a kaleidoscope of pronouns, safe spaces, and $15 avocado toast, none of which fits Trump’s brand of unapologetic Americana. For Cheney to equate Trump with any sort of leftist ideology is like claiming that a meatloaf is a salad. In fact, the biggest advantage Trump offers is his unabashed rejection of the left’s narrative, which makes Cheney’s take downright laughable.
As time rolls on, it seems that Cheney’s endorsement of Trump stands as an ironic talking point. While his concern might have sounded reasonable in the echo chamber of Washington, the reality check is that Trump has consistently proven to be anything but a liberal. The juxtaposition between Cheney’s cautionary words and Trump’s brash, proudly conservative actions provides a delightful example of just how disconnected some establishment figures can be from the heartbeat of the nation. In the end, anyone questioning Trump’s conservative bona fides clearly hasn’t paid attention to what he actually accomplished during his term.
