In a stunning display of political bias, CNN political commentator Jonah Goldberg boldly declared that the case brought against former President Donald Trump by New York Attorney General Letitia James was purely motivated by politics. Goldberg scoffed at the allegations against Trump, claiming that the trial should have never been initiated in the first place.
The case, which alleged that Trump inflated the value of his properties to secure more favorable loan terms, concluded with Trump delivering a closing statement. James, a Democrat, seeks a hefty penalty of $370 million and a lifetime ban on Trump conducting real estate business in New York. Additionally, she intends to impose a five-year business ban on Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., Trump’s sons.

During an interview with host Dana Bash, Goldberg scornfully dismissed the trial as nothing more than a political maneuver. With a touch of humor, he quoted the inscription over the gates of hell in Dante’s “Divine Comedy,” suggesting that the case against Trump was taking them to a dark place best left unexplored.
Goldberg further criticized the trial, emphasizing its political nature. He suggested that it was initiated by someone who campaigned on such actions and that an elected judge presided over the proceedings. It was, in Goldberg’s view, a cog in the party machinery that had set its sights on Trump.
Expressing his personal opinion, Goldberg acknowledged that he did not consider Trump innocent, dubbing him a “sleazy businessman.” Nonetheless, he maintained his stance that the trial was deeply politicized and should never have been pursued.
Recognizing Trump’s attachment to his business empire, Goldberg analyzed the psychological impact of the trial on the former president. While it may have been a blow to Trump’s pride, Goldberg argued that it provided him with a political advantage, allowing him to avoid constraints such as campaigning, debates, and public appearances.
Goldberg’s assessment of the trial aligns with the sentiment that Judge Arthur Engoron’s ruling in September was an exaggeration of Trump’s alleged misdeeds. The judge concluded that Trump and his business had deceitfully inflated his net worth, misled financial institutions, and overvalued assets.
The fact that James campaigned on targeting Trump during her bid for attorney general in 2018 further solidifies the argument that the case was politically motivated. It is becoming increasingly evident that Trump has faced extensive scrutiny due to his political adversaries’ relentless pursuit to undermine his achievements.
