Conservative Group Sues Bragg for Hiding Records in Trump Case

A new lawsuit has been launched against Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and not a moment too soon. The conservative group America First Legal (AFL) has stepped into the ring, alleging that Bragg has been engaging in a little bit of record hiding when it comes to the ongoing legal circus surrounding former President Donald Trump. According to the complaint, Bragg has turned into a master at dodging Freedom of Information Act requests that are simply trying to shine a light on what AFL calls Trump’s “partisan persecution.”

The heart of the matter lies in Bragg’s refusal to hand over communications between his office, the Biden administration, and other folks who might be trying to tip the scales in this high-profile case. AFL’s Vice President, Daniel Epstein, emphasized that there should be no secrets when it comes to prosecutorial conduct—unless, of course, one is trying to orchestrate a legal takedown of a political opponent. After all, transparency is an American value—unless you’re a Democrat, apparently.

The genesis of this lawsuit can be traced back to March 2023, when AFL started probing Bragg’s office with the fervor of a dog on a bone. Their requests included any and all communications regarding Trump and his entourage—notably, conversations with high-profile figures like Lanny Davis, the Democratic consultant who seems to have made it a sport to get Trump into hot water. It’s almost too much to stomach: a political consultant boasting about igniting the legal fires under a former president and now a leading Republican contender. It’s as if Davis thinks this is a game of Monopoly, and he’s just sent Trump to jail.

In a twist of irony, the previous Manhattan DA, Cyrus Vance, had given the whole Trump hush-money case the thumbs down after a thorough investigation. Fast forward to Bragg’s tenure, where Cohen—the once-burned lawyer for Trump—became Bragg’s prized witness. After a remarkably swift trial, Trump found himself guilty on all counts of falsifying business records in connection to a payment that was made during the heat of the 2016 campaign. Now, Trump is sitting on a sentencing date that many believe to be a politically charged event more than a legal one.

AFL’s lawsuit isn’t merely an exercise in frustration; it’s a call for Bragg to come clean about his motives. AFL argues that Bragg’s apparent lack of cooperation and selective release of documents reeks of political gamesmanship and a blatant disregard for New York’s open records law. Now, Bragg is hiding behind excuses like grand jury secrecy and attorney work product protections. So much for transparency, huh? According to AFL, a single-page document is all that Bragg has been willing to cough up, leaving the rest of the requests languishing in what seems like the bottom of a very deep bureaucratic well.

The lawsuit aims to pry loose the information that Bragg has been keeping under lock and key, essentially demanding an answer to the question: what are these public servants trying to hide? As the gears of justice grind on, one thing is clear: the show is far from over. If America First Legal gets its way, the truth might just come flashing into the light, which may be the last thing Alvin Bragg wants!
