After the recent conviction of former President Donald Trump, many conservative political commentators expressed their disapproval through the use of an upside-down American flag on social media and at the Heritage Foundation. However, this action has raised concerns about the appropriateness of such a display.
The use of the upside-down flag as a symbol of protest by conservatives gained traction following the 2020 election and garnered attention when it was briefly flown by Samuel Alito’s wife. However, according to the U.S. Flag Code, the flag should only be displayed upside-down as a signal of extreme distress. Given that Trump’s conviction does not meet this criteria, the use of the upside-down flag may be viewed as inappropriate.

The criticism from the Left regarding the upside-down flag display overlooks the fact that it was actually initiated by leftist supporters in the past. For instance, the act of kneeling during the national anthem by Colin Kaepernick was defended by the Left, and anti-Vietnam War demonstrators used the upside-down flag as a form of protest. Even John Kerry faced controversy for featuring the flipped flag on a book cover.
In addition, pride flags, which have become ubiquitous in public spaces, are seen by some as nonsensical or even disrespectful. The widespread display of pride flags in schools, state buildings, and even churches, particularly during the month of June, has drawn criticism from conservatives.
Furthermore, engaging in symbolic flag warfare, such as burning or flipping the flag, is viewed as a futile exercise that carries no real-world impact. While political symbolism can be influential, desecrating the American flag for the purpose of making a political statement is considered unserious and lacks genuine substance.
It is important to recognize the American flag as a symbol of patriotism, and its use as a political emblem should be embraced to convey positive messages. However, it should not be exploited to denigrate the values and principles it represents.
