The study, published in JAMA Network Open, reveals that the number of transgender surgeries performed in the United States rose significantly from 2016 to 2019, but decreased in 2020. According to the study, the number of gender transition surgeries jumped from 4,552 in 2016 to a staggering 13,011 in 2019, but dipped slightly to 12,818 in 2020. While these numbers are still concerning, any decline, even a small one, is a step in the right direction.
The study also highlights that the majority of individuals undergoing these surgeries are between the ages of 19 and 30. Those under 18 make up a small percentage of the overall patients. Vance’s proposed legislation aims to protect young Americans from a lifetime of suffering and regret. This proactive approach is commendable and in line with conservative values that prioritize the well-being and dignity of individuals, especially vulnerable children.
The decrease in transgender surgeries during the COVID-19 pandemic is a silver lining in an otherwise troubling issue.
