In a move that might shock his own party more than the Republicans, Adam Frisch, a so-called moderate Democrat aiming to oust Lauren Boebert in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, has demanded that President Biden withdraw from the 2024 re-election race. Yes, you read that right. A Democrat wants his own president to step down. Frisch released a video on social media and penned an editorial for the Washington Post, where he argued that Biden should bow out to make way for someone more capable—though finding a more capable Democrat could be a challenge in itself.
Frisch’s video didn’t mince words. He bluntly stated that neither Biden nor his likely Republican opponent are fit to hold office. He called for Biden to exit the race, suggesting that the nation deserves better leadership. The opinion piece in the Post only added fuel to the fire, claiming that the debate performance by Biden left the country stunned and showcased an apparent lack of mental acuity. According to Frisch, Biden’s fallibility is as clear as day and will be used against him in relentless campaign ads until Election Day.

One has to wonder if Frisch is playing a high-stakes political chess game or merely trying to stave off his electoral defeat by distancing himself from an unpopular president. After all, he almost unseated Boebert in 2022 and had been gearing up for a rematch until she decamped to a safer Republican district. Now he’s left in an awkward position, both politically and geographically.
Interestingly, the Cook Political Report still marks the 3rd District as leaning Republican, making Frisch’s challenge even more daunting. It’s not as if Democrats are flocking to his banner, especially after such a daring condemnation of their sitting president. On the same day, Frisch released his video, Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas also joined the “Biden-should-bow-out” chorus, becoming the first sitting Democratic Congressmember to do so publicly.
Let’s not forget that Biden has already secured the majority of delegates in the primaries and caucuses. Under Democratic Party rules, these delegates are bound to vote for him unless he voluntarily releases them. So, unless Biden has a sudden moment of clarity—don’t hold your breath—Frisch’s demand is nothing but wishful thinking. For now, it looks like the Democrats will continue to march to the beat of a faltering drum, wishing for a hail-Mary that’s unlikely to come.
