A shocking scene unfolded at the Democratic National Convention as a throng of anti-Israel protesters made their grand entrance by breaching the security fencing, leading to a wave of arrests. This unhinged display occurred just as the Democrats were preparing to finalize their elaborate plans to hand over the baton to Kamala Harris, in a coup against the fair and honest administration of Joe Biden.
The first night of what some might call a glorified coronation was marred by these interruptions and logistical hiccups that pushed Biden’s farewell address well into the night. One could argue that the chaos was the perfect illustration of how far the once-unified Democrats have strayed from coherent governance. According to the Chicago Police, the outer fence was breached but the inner perimeter remained secure, giving the impression that law enforcement was more efficient at containing chaos than the Democrats were at managing their convention. With the protest size far smaller than expected, perhaps the Democrats should rethink their strategies moving forward—especially if they want to avoid future embarrassing interruptions.
While tensions brewed outside, it was clear that the inside of the convention was just as fractured. Biden attempted to placate the dissenters, claiming that the anti-Israel protesters had “a point,” but it’s hard to find anyone who believes he has any real grasp on the situation. The same crowd that excused Biden’s half-hearted foreign policy was quick to threaten a protest vote during early campaigning, but when push came to shove, many admitted they’d vote for Harris simply because the alternative is—surprise, surprise—Donald Trump.
As if to further complicate their narrative, the event showcased an unhealthy obsession with bashing Trump more than addressing the pressing issues of the economy and border security. The Democrats’ love-fest for Biden was equally undeniable, even as apparent tensions lingered due to the ongoing coup against him. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was caught on camera appearing to mumble her thanks to Biden, though it was less of a show of gratitude and more of a reluctant acknowledgment of a sinking ship.
In a move that felt like adding injury to insult, Biden’s lengthy farewell speech was relegated to the late-night hours, with the Democrats pointing fingers at the crowd’s “enthusiasm” for the delays. By the time night two rolls around, the party strategists will have moved the start time up—no doubt to avoid any scheduling meltdowns. As Democrats eagerly await Harris’s acceptance speech later in the week, one can only imagine how much fun audiences will have dissecting this deeply dysfunctional gathering.
