In the wake of the devastating attacks on Israeli civilians by Hamas, it was initially encouraging to see Democrats in Washington express support for Israel’s right to defend itself. However, as time goes on, it becomes clear that this support may not be as steadfast as it initially appeared. President Biden’s call for a temporary pause in Israel’s offensive, along with his threat to veto military aid unless it is tied to money for Ukraine, is concerning to say the least.
While it is important to help both Israel and Ukraine in their fights against enemies who threaten American interests, this is not the time to play political games. Each case should be presented separately and voted on accordingly, rather than allowing Israel to suffer while the debate over Ukraine funding slows down. Unfortunately, it seems that many Congressional Democrats are heading down this reckless and unacceptable path.

Only a dozen members of the pro-Israel House Democratic minority voted in favor of the stand-alone Israel bill, with some Democratic leaders arguing against providing any help to Israel if it means a separate vote on Ukraine funding. Even some supposed supporters of Israel in the Senate are wavering in their support, with one member of leadership embracing a Hamas-boosting “ceasefire” and another expressing concern about civilian casualties. The media is also contributing to the narrative by focusing on the concept of “disproportionality,” despite Israel’s efforts to minimize civilian casualties.
The double standard applied to Israel by the so-called “international community” is glaring and exposes a clear bias against the Jewish state. The obsession with criticizing Israel while turning a blind eye to the actions of its enemies is nothing short of anti-Semitism. It is clear that there is no chance for a ceasefire or peace deal with Hamas, as they have shown time and again that they have no regard for the lives of their own people.
It is disheartening to see the wavering support for Israel among Democrats in Washington. Now more than ever, it is crucial to stand with Israel and provide the support it needs to defend itself against terrorism.
