Democrats Waver as Calls for Biden to Step Down Surge

Maybe Democrats should start knitting Biden a cozy retirement blanket because it looks like his own party members are ready to send him packing. Rep. Raul Grijalva of Arizona is now the second Democrat in the House to tell President Biden, in the nicest possible way, to hit the road after his spectacularly unsteady debate performance last week.

Grijalva, who was once the co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has put it delicately—like a hammer wrapped in velvet. He’s suggested that Biden has a “responsibility” to keep his seat, implying that this responsibility might best be fulfilled by stepping aside. While Grijalva pledges to support Biden if he remains the candidate, he hints that perhaps it’s high time Democrats looked elsewhere. Judging by Biden’s recent debate debacle, Grijalva may be onto something.

Not to be outdone, Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas piped up a day earlier. Doggett claims that the imminent threat of Donald Trump making a White House comeback screams for a fresh face in the Democratic camp. The debate, Doggett argues, did nothing but dash hopes and fuel more frustration among voters. He seems to believe a new candidate could rally all those voters who disdain both Trump and Biden, potentially bringing the divided Democrats together.

In response, the Trump campaign didn’t hold back. They insist that every Democrat now calling for Biden’s exit once backed his flawed policies, which have unleashed rampant inflation, an open border crisis, and sheer bedlam at home and abroad. The Trump camp paints the Democrats, the mainstream media, and the so-called swamp as collaborative conspirators who have concealed the truth about Biden’s glaring weaknesses.

And let’s not forget the heir-apparent, Kamala Harris. She’s lurking in the wings, ready to pounce should Biden bow out. According to the Trump team, every Democrat has lied about Biden’s cognitive dysfunction while bolstering his catastrophic decisions. The suggestion? Those endorsing Biden’s floundering presidency, particularly Harris, aren’t fit to lead.

Polls aren’t looking pretty for Biden either. A recent New York Times-Siena College poll shows a staggering 57% of likely voters think the Democrats should dump Biden for someone else in the 2024 race. Even more striking, three out of four voters across the board think Biden is simply too old to be effective.

So, as Biden’s closest allies start sharpening their proverbial knives, conservatives can sit back and enjoy the spectacle of the Democratic Party imploding under the weight of their own choices. Go ahead, Dems—find someone else. It’s going to be a long and entertaining ride to 2024.
