Leftists and their GOP allies are once again resorting to desperate measures in their attempts to remove Donald Trump from the political landscape. Their latest scheme involves exploiting the Fourteenth Amendment and a ridiculous legal theory that disqualifies “insurrectionists” from holding public office. Of course, this theory is being championed by anti-Trump conservatives and veterans of the “#Resistance” like Harvard professor Laurence Tribe and conservative legal scholar Michael J. Luttig, who penned an article for the liberal cesspool, The Atlantic.
Their argument is that Trump’s efforts to question the 2020 election results and the subsequent attack on the Capitol make him ineligible to serve as president ever again. However, there’s just one tiny problem with their narrative – Trump has not been convicted or even formally accused of insurrection in any of the four criminal cases he is facing. Even in the case regarding January 6th, the charges against Trump fall short of claiming he engaged in insurrection or sedition.
Conservative law professor Jonathan Turley points out that the reason Trump wasn’t charged with incitement is quite obvious – the evidence and constitutional standards do not support such a charge. Turley goes on to dismiss the Fourteenth Amendment theory as a “legal urban legend.” He argues that there is no clear distinction between January 6th and previous efforts by Democrats to challenge election results. If the standard were to disqualify any effort to stop a constitutional process, then protests against Trump and challenges to electoral votes in 2016 could also be cited as disqualifying.
The Democrats’ primary motivation behind this devious scheme is their fear of Trump’s popularity. Despite their relentless efforts to discredit and imprison him, Trump remains tied with or even surpassing Biden in the polls. The possibility of Trump being reelected terrifies them, and they will stoop to any level to prevent it. They claim to be champions of democracy, but their actions speak otherwise. They want to remove their political opponent from the ballot and deny the American people the opportunity to choose their own leader.
Letting the people decide who they want as their president is a fundamental aspect of a democratic republic. However, the Democrats are willing to trample on this principle in their quest for absolute power. Their thuggish scheme to jail Trump or disqualify him from the ballot must be vigorously opposed. If they succeed, it would mark the death of the America we know and love. We cannot allow these power-hungry individuals to destroy our democracy for their own political gain.
