Yet, as Harris has been propped up as the Democrats’ likely presidential nominee, outlets like PolitiFact have resorted to creative spins, declaring the “border czar” label “mostly false.” Meanwhile, Axios has recently done a 180, attempting to assert that Harris never held the title, despite previously acknowledging her appointment.

The media’s effort to sanitize Harris’s overcrowded role at the border becomes all the more comical when one considers the substantial responsibility she has shouldered, whether labeled a czar or not. Gaetz’s demand for transparency is timely; as Democrats attempt to polish the tarnished image of Harris, her inadequacies in responding to the border crisis consistently haunt her, contributing to her historically low approval ratings. As the left tries to rewrite the narrative, it seems oblivious to the facts on the ground—chiefly, that Harris was charged with addressing the very meltdown at the border that is now a stain on her record.
Echoes of this media charade can be seen in RedState’s coverage, which recently called out the left’s historical revisionism regarding Harris’s title. Axios fired shots in her defense, only to contradict their earlier reporting that acknowledged her as the border czar. Such attempts to “un-appoint” Harris from a title that president Biden himself seemingly bestowed upon her reflect a desperation that permeates the left’s narrative. Even The New York Times has noted that, regardless of her formal title, Harris has been knee-deep in responsibilities tied to border security and engaging with Central American nations to address the roots of migration.
The irony in the Democrats’ current predicament is thick. As they try to showcase Harris as a capable leader, her track record with immigration issues lingers like a bad smell. Gaetz’s inquiries might bring additional clarity to an already murky situation, but for those tuned into the ongoing border crises, the conclusion is evident: Harris is, at best, a reluctant figurehead of a failing operation. Her time to shine has been overshadowed by a border situation that spiraled out of control during her watch, leaving the Democrats to grapple with the consequences of their own making.
