House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has set a deadline for an impeachment inquiry into Attorney General Merrick Garland. This comes after revelations from IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley, who accused Garland and Weiss of lying to Congress and the press by saying that the DOJ never interfered in Weiss’ ability to file charges against Hunter Biden in California and Washington, DC.

When Garland responded by insinuating that Shapley wasn’t being truthful, the whistleblower called his bluff, naming the names of the FBI and IRS agents who were in the room when Weiss allegedly admitted he had been rebuffed by DOJ leadership. McCarthy has now said that an impeachment inquiry will start on July 6th if the allegations against the Attorney General are proven to be true.

McCarthy has set a deadline and it’s good to see him taking initiative on this issue. An impeachment inquiry is the required first step toward a formal impeachment, which Republicans will need to secure the votes in the House to move forward.
It’s important to note that McCarthy is being careful in his statements, as he can’t prejudge the whistleblower’s testimony without first corroborating it. However, finding corroboration shouldn’t be too difficult, given that Shapley has named everyone who was in the room with him and Weiss. The next step is to force all of those people under oath before Congress, which should be done to ascertain credibility. If McCarthy was able to set a date, he must already have a plan to get everything done before then.
It is evident from Shapley’s accusations that Garland and Weiss lied to Congress and the press, and that they interfered with Weiss’ ability to file charges against Hunter Biden. Shapley’s testimony should be taken seriously and his testimony should be heard. McCarthy’s decision to set a deadline is just the first step towards holding Garland accountable and it is important to follow through with this impeachment inquiry.
