House GOP leaders are considering their options after the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced plans to file arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The move has sparked outrage among many lawmakers, including President Joe Biden. The ICC’s decision to pursue warrants for the Israeli officials and senior Hamas leaders has been widely criticized as baseless and illegitimate, with many condemning the court for equating the actions of Hamas with those of Israel.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) condemned the ICC’s actions as “baseless and illegitimate,” emphasizing that the court has no authority over Israel or the United States. He also pointed to the ICC’s attempt to equate Israeli officials with terrorists and suggested that the Biden administration’s pressure campaign against Israel may have influenced the ICC’s decision.
Johnson further stated that Congress is exploring various options, including sanctions, to hold the ICC accountable and ensure that its leadership faces consequences if they proceed with the arrest warrants. He expressed concerns that allowing the ICC to threaten Israeli leaders could set a dangerous precedent for the United States.
Other Republican lawmakers, such as Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL), are also pushing for sanctions against the ICC. House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) is calling for the passage of a bill that would sanction any foreign person involved in ICC efforts to investigate or arrest a U.S. citizen or an official from an allied country.
Stefanik labeled the ICC as an “illegitimate court” and emphasized the need for Congress to pass a bill that would punish those involved in the ICC’s decision. Several pro-Israel House Democrats have also criticized the ICC’s actions, with Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) describing it as “retribution against Israel” and Rep. Kathy Manning (D-NC) calling it “extreme judicial overreach.”
The consensus among lawmakers, both Republican and Democratic, is that the ICC’s pursuit of arrest warrants for Israeli officials is unjust and unwarranted. The ICC’s actions have ignited bipartisan condemnation and calls for punitive measures to address what many perceive as a threat to democratic nations and their sovereignty.
