Vice President Kamala Harris recently found herself in a bit of a pickle while trying to craft a positive image of her presidential opponent, Donald Trump, during a town hall in Las Vegas. When an audience member prompted her to provide three virtues that Trump possesses, her brain seemed to short circuit. Rather than addressing Trump’s character or contributions to the country, Harris opted for a roundabout response, opting to emphasize how most people share more in common than not. While this may play well in a feel-good social media post, it hardly does the heavy lifting required in an election season. Her statement was riddled with contradictions, as she quickly shifted to criticizing Trump for fostering division and claiming his approach “pains” her. Apparently, drawing lines in the political sand is only a concern when it’s coming from Trump, not her own party.

Trying again to find a silver lining, Harris did muster a half-hearted acknowledgment of Trump’s dedication to his family. The irony here is palpable: this praise barely scratches the surface and is nearly drowned out by her failure to truly engage with the question. Harris’s admission of only having met Trump once would raise eyebrows if it weren’t clear she’s sticking to the narrative her party has long spun regarding him. The inability to recognize any virtues may be a reflection of her party’s narrative, which has crafted a caricature of Trump as the embodiment of evil.
Meanwhile, Trump is not one to sit quietly during a political debate, even if it’s of a verbal nature. He’s schedule to hold his own Univision town hall just a week later, which stands to attract a lot of attention. His previous remarks about Harris have been pointed, labeling her as “mentally impaired.” It’s a pointed jab that reflects not only his typical bravado but serves as a reminder that this clash is as much about personalities as it is about policies.
As the election approaches, it’s clear that this lack of civility and mutual respect among candidates is less about virtuous political discourse and more about survival in their respective bases. Harris’s struggle to compliment Trump reflects a deeper division within the party lines, while Trump continues to leverage every opportunity for pointed rhetoric.
