Former President Donald Trump has made it clear that he believes Senate Republicans need a new leader after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s recent health scare. Trump, being his usual blunt self, expressed his thoughts to Breitbart, saying, “We have to have that.” McConnell, who froze up during a press conference before being escorted away, later returned and briefed the press. While Trump did express his hopes for McConnell’s well-being, he also didn’t hold back on criticizing him for his policy moves.
Trump specifically took issue with McConnell’s support for giving Green New Deal money to President Biden and the Democrats. He accused McConnell of getting 10 people to vote for trillions of dollars on multiple occasions, which he believes was a waste. Trump even brought up McConnell’s previous fall this year, suggesting it might be related to his recent incident. It’s clear that Trump isn’t letting this opportunity slide to criticize McConnell’s political maneuvers.

In response to the health scare, McConnell’s office released a statement assuring that he will continue to serve his full term. But Trump’s call for a new leader among Senate Republicans is likely to add fuel to the fire of tension within the party. With Trump’s influence still strong among conservative Republicans, his opinion carries weight.
