House Republicans Accuse Bidens of Lying, Seek DOJ Investigation

House Republicans have accused Hunter Biden and the president’s brother, James Biden, of lying to lawmakers about their business dealings. The lawmakers sent a letter to the Justice Department requesting an investigation into the matter.

They claimed that Hunter Biden and James Biden gave false statements during closed-door depositions in February. They also accused Hunter Biden of perjury. The three House panels leading the impeachment inquiry into the president are seeking to expose the Bidens’ involvement in lucrative foreign business deals.

The lawmakers are asking the Justice Department to look into whether Hunter Biden violated the terms of his federal supervised release by providing false testimony. Hunter Biden is currently facing gun and tax charges in Delaware.

While it is unlikely that the Justice Department will pursue prosecutions against the Bidens, the criminal referrals represent a significant move by GOP lawmakers following their impeachment probe. However, with the GOP’s slim majority and an upcoming election, it is unlikely that they can gather enough votes to impeach the president on corruption charges.

Democrats argue that the GOP has failed to produce concrete evidence of the president’s involvement in his family’s business affairs. Nevertheless, the lawmakers accused Hunter Biden of lying about his connection to a shell company called Rosemont Seneca Bohai, as well as his involvement in a threatening text message sent to demand payment from a Chinese business partner.

They also accused James Biden of lying about attending a meeting with a Chinese energy company executive. House Republicans are committed to holding the Bidens accountable and have indicated that the criminal referrals are only the beginning of their efforts to do so.
