On Wednesday night, after a seemingly never-ending meeting that was seriously crazy at times, even featuring an unexpected appearance from the big man’s son, the House Oversight Committee cast a party-line vote of 25-21 to hold Hunter Biden in contempt. Yup, you read that right folks – they held the mighty Hunter Biden in contempt.
Hunter had received totally legal subpoenas to give a behind-closed-doors testimony. But get this – instead of just doing the right thing, he offered to spill the beans in a public hearing. However, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer wasn’t having any of that nonsense. He was quick to let Hunter know that his offer was not gonna cut it. Comer and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan made it abundantly clear to Hunter and his legal eagles that he better show up or face the music. And what did Hunter do? He pulled up to the Capitol on December 13, to the Senate side, to do a press conference in a space reserved by Rep. Eric Swalwell, and then he bailed. So, the Committees finally took action to hold Hunter accountable.

In the midst of the chaos, Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI) summed it up well, as members went off on a tangent about “white privilege,” January 6, and former and potentially future President Donald Trump.
The Democratic members spent the whole day sticking up for Hunter Biden, making excuses, and defending him. It was like a theme party for them, and they loved it. At one point, Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) went on about Hunter being “someone who has made every effort to comply in every way other than these specific means of providing the evidence.” Then he went after the Republican members for issuing subpoenas without evidence linking Hunter to President Joe Biden. And he accused them of holding a contempt hearing just to avoid a public testimony from Hunter. Such sneaky tactics!
But Chairman Comer assured everyone that Hunter’s deposition transcript would be made public. When Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX) finally gave him a chance to speak, Comer talked about the concerning number of suspicious activity reports (SARs) from banks on the Bidens and reminded everyone that Hunter “doesn’t get to set the rules.” Yep, there will be a public hearing after his behind-closed-doors testimony, so both parties can get a piece of the action.
What’s more, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) had been trying to get some time from the Democrats to respond to their points. He pointed out that a witness deposition is essential before a public hearing, and it’s usually how things are done in the House of Representatives. But the Democrats were refusing to play by the rules, and it was causing a ruckus.
Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) agreed, saying that they needed a deposition to prevent a circus like the one they were currently in. He spoke passionately about the array of evidence against Hunter Biden, claiming that the Democrats were just trying to muddy the waters for political gain. He even took a dig at Hunter’s privileged behavior, reminding everyone how others have faced dire consequences for similar offenses.
Despite these clear explanations, Goldman kept making excuses for Hunter, which led to some intense back-and-forth between him and the Republican members. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) chimed in, reminding everyone that nobody is above the law, even the president’s son. She called out the double standards and special treatment being given to Hunter.
Even at the end of the day, the Democrats were still playing the same old tune, expressing concerns about the process. They were worried about the Republicans distorting information and picking out bits to suit their own agenda. But Chairman Comer once again reiterated that Hunter was more than welcome to have his say after his deposition.
In the morning, the Judiciary Committee also voted along party lines to hold Hunter Biden in contempt. Both resolutions are headed to the floor of the Republican-controlled House, and it’s gonna be quite the showdown. So, if the full House agrees to hold him in contempt, Hunter will be referred to the Department of Justice. Let’s see how this saga unfolds!
