Hunter Biden to Face Trial Monday on Federal Gun Charges

Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is set to go on trial for gun charges in a federal court in Delaware on Monday. He faces charges of possessing a revolver while being a user of unlawful drugs and lying about his drug habit while purchasing the firearm.

In his defense, Mr. Biden argues that he is being unfairly targeted for prosecution because of his father’s fame. However, a review of federal gun prosecutions reveals several cases where individuals were charged and convicted for similar offenses.

One such case is that of David Jon Ray, an Illinois businessman who admitted to being a habitual cocaine user with a penchant for guns. He was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for failing to pay taxes and engaging in the same kind of behavior as Mr. Biden.

Additionally, the review highlighted cases such as an Arkansas woman convicted for trying to help her boyfriend escape gun charges by claiming ownership of a handgun and drug possession, as well as a man in Vermont charged as a drug user in possession of a shotgun.

Mr. Biden’s impending trial stems from his admission of drug struggles in his 2021 memoir and evidence obtained from his abandoned laptop and iCloud account. He is accused of possessing a firearm while being a drug user and lying about his drug use during a firearms purchase background check.

His attorneys have sought to dismiss the felony gun charges, arguing vindictive prosecution and citing statistics on the low percentage of gun crime prosecutions involving unlawful drug users. However, the judge rejected Mr. Biden’s motion to dismiss the charges.

If convicted, Mr. Biden faces a maximum of 25 years in prison, but legal experts suggest that probation is a more likely outcome.
