Illinois Rep Casten Joins Calls for Biden to Skip 2024 Race

Rep. Sean Casten, Democrat from Illinois, has hopped onto the ever-growing bandwagon of House Democrats urging President Joe Biden to suspend his reelection campaign. Apparently, the spotlight on Biden’s “senior moments”—a euphemism for the frequent gaffes and sundry forgetting sprees—is overshadowing what little capabilities he might still be clinging to.

Casten penned an op-ed in the Chicago Tribune, lamenting the inevitable: as much as one might hope elections were about performance, promises, and character, they’re apparently more a parade of which candidate can avoid public embarrassment. Casten seems to think Biden will lose this contest. He’s also certain the President is uniquely incapable of changing this embarrassing narrative. As if reality needed another shoutout, Casten has become the 22nd Democrat to usher Biden toward the exit door.

Just to keep it lively, Casten isn’t alone. Nineteen of his House colleagues and Senators Peter Welch from Vermont and Jon Tester from Montana have also sent their “Dear John” letters. And let’s not overlook Casten’s Illinois amigos, Reps. Brad Schneider, Mike Quigley, and Eric Sorensen, who have all added their voices to the Democratic discord choir. They’re all but begging Biden to let the party find a new standard-bearer.

Despite this chorus of discontent, Biden and his campaign team are obstinately clinging to their delusions of electoral grandeur. They insist Biden will be the Democratic nominee, though rumors suggest there may be some tiny cracks in that facade. Officially, the campaign denies any reconsideration, but behind closed doors, who knows what sort of reality check might be happening?

Casten waxed nostalgic about Biden’s so-called legacy, calling for a dignified and decent exit. Sure, having fostered decades of public service, Biden’s supposed legacy cries out for an honorable departure. After all, Casten and company believe some fresh faces should step in to carry Biden’s torch, which they insist once “saved our democracy.”

Apparently, as painful as it might be, they’re coming to terms with the obvious: Biden is not capable of fulfilling the demands of another term. Given the party’s unified cry for change, it seems Biden’s sunset could be on the horizon, whether he acknowledges it or not.
