Vice President Kamala Harris is facing some hefty backlash after a 2019 American Civil Liberties Union questionnaire resurfaced, revealing her full-throttle leftist views on sensitive topics like immigrant detention and taxpayer-funded transgender surgeries. This revelation comes at a time when she seems to be attempting to cozy up to the center in a bid for political survival as she gears up for her presidential campaign.
Discovered by CNN, this five-year-old document had been sitting in plain sight on the ACLU’s website, much like a hidden skeleton in an overstuffed closet. In her responses, Harris expressed her firm belief that illegal immigrants, currently locked up by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, should have access to gender surgeries, all funded by taxpayers. This perspective was defended under the banner of “medically necessary” care as if a one-way ticket to the operating table is somehow included in the standard healthcare package for crossing the border illegally.

Further complicating her current political positioning are her intentions to shutter not just private ICE jails but ICE facilities altogether, which she has dubbed “out of control.” In 2019, Harris was adamant about reducing the number of illegal immigrants in detention by half, a bold claim that seems more like a desperate attempt to attract liberal voters than a feasible plan. In contrast, the Biden-Harris administration presides over an unprecedented number of illegal border crossings—over 10 million people since February 2021. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!
In the resurfaced ACLU questionnaire, Harris passionately lamented the state of the U.S. immigration detention system, claiming it was an unfair incarceration machine. This plea appears puzzling, given that a few questions linger regarding the safety and security implications of releasing individuals deemed to be a risk. It’s all sunshine and rainbows when it comes to eliminating detention, but one can’t help but wonder what happens when it’s their neighbor who faces the consequences of these policies.
Moreover, Harris’s support for transgender medical services for illegal immigrant detainees raises eyebrows. In the same 2019 document, she emphasized the importance of providing gender transition treatments to those who might find themselves behind bars. As California’s attorney general, she famously fought for state prisoners to receive cosmetic surgeries, so one has to wonder how a hard-nosed law-and-order approach jives with bending over backward for the whims of the small percentage of illegal immigrants in detention.
As Harris continues to lay out her game plan for the border in preparation for the upcoming elections, she claims she would back a bipartisan border bill. This step seems less about genuine concern and more about preserving electoral viability as the floodgates remain wide open. She appears to be caught in a web of her own making, swinging wildly from her far-left roots to a semblance of centrism in hopes of grasping any remaining support. The question now remains: can a politician, so visible in embracing such radical ideas, successfully pivot enough to capture the middle ground? The answer will be revealed in the ensuing electoral showdown, but the odds don’t seem to be in her favor.
