Contrary to the Democratic narrative that touted Biden as a beacon of vitality, insiders revealed that Harris’s team was in on the joke. They concocted all sorts of scenarios around his potential exit from the office, planning for contingencies that would make even the most dramatic sitcom writers envious. Harris’s preparation, although decidedly predicated on disaster, shows just how adept she is at playing the political game. The Democrats crafted a variety of exit strategies for Biden, whether it be through a sudden health scare or an awkward yet graceful bow out before the primaries. What they seem to have neglected, however, is the reality that if the time came for Harris to step up, she’d be the last person any sane voter would want at the helm. The Democratic Party had all their ducks in a row but forgot to ensure that one of those ducks was at least electable.
In a bizarre twist of political irony, while Democrats eyed graceful exits for Biden, the unfortunate truth remained that they were stuck with Kamala Harris—the very definition of an unelectable candidate whose primary claim to fame has now devolved into being the first woman of color to occupy the vice-presidential post. It appears that in their scramble for contingency plans, Democratic leaders failed to notice that an embattled team filled with “what if” scenarios couldn’t swaddle a candidate whose every idea and proceeding seemed destined for the dumpster.
