A council from a group called the Knights of Columbus in Petersburg, VA, decided to take action against the Biden administration. They were upset because they were not allowed to have their usual Memorial Day Mass at Poplar Grove National Cemetery. This decision made the group file a lawsuit, claiming they were being treated unfairly because of their religion. The Knights of Columbus have been doing this service for 60 years, and this is the second year in a row they couldn’t hold it.
People from the Knights of Columbus have hired lawyers from McGuireWoods to help them challenge the National Park Service (NPS). The group wants to be able to continue their tradition this Memorial Day. They believe that by not letting them have their service, the government is not respecting their rights under the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The attorneys representing them asked the court to allow the Knights to hold their service as they always have.

On the other hand, Alexa Viets, who is in charge of Petersburg National Battlefield, defended the decision to not let the Knights of Columbus have their Mass. She explained that the cemetery is a special place for honoring those who died serving the country. Special events there are usually only for activities related to military service or with important historical meaning. The National Park Service has had rules in place since 1986 that classify religious gatherings as “demonstrations,” which are not allowed without special permission.
The Knights of Columbus feel that the recent denial goes against past practices and is unfair. They believe that the National Park Service is not following the right rules. It will be up to the court to decide if the Knights can have their Memorial Day Mass this year. It is essential for religious groups to be able to practice their traditions without interference from the government.
