As Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the appointment of Randi Weingarten, the leftist and militant leader of the American Federation of Teachers union, to a DHS academic council, the American people were left incensed. Weingarten was selected to join the Homeland Security Academic Partnership Council, which is comprised of 20 members who will provide strategic and actionable recommendations on campus safety and security, research priorities, hiring, and other topics.
JUST IN: Far-Left teachers union boss, Randi Weingarten, who played a key role in keeping schools closed in 2020 has been appointed to the Department of Homeland Security’s academic council.
She should be fired and jailed, not promoted!https://t.co/NkdkD5k5Eh

Given Weingarten's history of hostility toward parental rights organizations and intransigence regarding COVID-related school closures, this decision was met with vehement opposition. Her aggressive advocacy for extended school closures and remote learning, even after numerous studies demonstrated that children were at a lower risk for COVID complications, has been a significant source of contention. The American Federation of Teachers' plan for reopening schools included exorbitant requirements such as daily school sanitation, additional staff training, and remote learning if cases exceeded a certain threshold. Weingarten was unwavering in her support for her proposal, despite mounting evidence from American and European schools that reopening was wholly feasible, and despite the elimination of any claims of "emergency orders" or "national lockdowns" affecting schools.

Weingarten previously stated, "There is a crisis of misinformation and education inequality in this country, and it threatens the very fabric of our democracy and nation." Her "fabric of our democracy" appears to be one that seeks to elevate parental rights organizations to the level of domestic terrorist threats requiring surveillance. Weingarten praised Attorney General Merrick Garland and his federal law enforcement agencies for forming a task force to target organizations that oppose the forced inclusion of radical race and gender ideology in school curricula.
Weingarten has consistently demonstrated hostility and loathing towards any form of dissenting opinion or conversation. Her appointment to the DHS advisory council comes just weeks after the far-left Southern Poverty Law Center strengthened its stranglehold on federal law enforcement agencies by updating its list of "hate groups" to include Moms for Liberty and other parental rights groups. As a result of the infiltration of socialists into academia, it is not surprising that the Department of Homeland Security has recruited a zealot opposed to parental rights.
