Liberals Weaponize Rule of Law Against Trump’s Effective Policies

The rule of law, a principle that should be as solid as a rock for any functioning democracy, has turned into a makeshift weapon for critics of President Trump. The complaints have flown faster than a New York taxi in rush hour, with liberal politicians taking shots at the president for his decisions to fire federal workers, squeeze spending, and enforce immigration regulations that might actually work. Apparently, enforcing the law is now seen as some kind of authoritarian threat.

From Capitol Hill to Twitter timelines, the left has been in a tizzy, claiming that Mr. Trump is testing the “guardrails” of democracy. It’s amusing to see leaders like Senator Chuck Schumer lamenting Trump’s supposed divestment from the rule of law, as if it’s overly generous to call Washington’s legal circus a bastion of justice. The Brennan Center for Justice, always eager to side with the liberal narrative, has taken to whining about Trump’s early activities, asserting that his style of leadership screams authoritarianism.

One of the organization’s complaints, decorated in the usual liberal emotional flair, points to Trump’s attempts to limit birthright citizenship and dismantle wasteful foreign aid programs. The American Bar Association, with its own left-leaning agenda, has unleashed a couple of scathing statements against the president, declaring chaos and imploring everyone who still believes in the rule of law to join their crusade against Trump’s agenda. It all sounds a bit like a theatre of the absurd at this point.

The irony is hard to miss. While critics are clutching their pearls over Trump’s approach, they seem to have conveniently forgotten their own astonishing disregard for the law during the Biden administration, where anyone in America could have seen the undue leniency given to rioters during the summer of unrest. The same ABA that is now distressed over Trump’s actions never blinked an eye when law enforcement was selectively applied during those protests. Instead, they bemoaned the fine application of law primarily when it was Republicans complaining under the Biden watch.

As Schumer and his colleagues throw around accusations of a “scorched earth assault on the rule of law,” it’s reasonable to ask whether they even recognize the concept of a balanced legal system. When Senate Majority Leader John Thune praised Trump for restoring respect for immigration laws, one has to wonder if Democrats are looking in a mirror when they pontificate on authority. With the ABA issuing over-the-top statements regarding Trump’s reactions to unfavorable judicial rulings, including harsh criticisms aimed at Musk for his comments, it’s clear that some folks are just afraid of a strong executive who doesn’t roll over to judicial whims.

In short, this so-called crisis about the rule of law finds itself nestled comfortably in an ongoing tug-of-war, where either side can be seen using the law as a tool to manufacture outrage. It seems that the real issue isn’t whether Trump is upholding the law, but whether he’s doing it in a manner that makes the establishment feel comfortable. In a world where many politicians exhibit selective adherence to legality, the only thing reigning supreme is the maneuverability of political narratives.
