The mainstream media is in full meltdown mode, and this time it’s over President Joe Biden’s questionable debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Calls for Biden to abandon his reelection bid are growing louder as liberal strongholds like The New York Times, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and even The New Yorker are finally seeing the writing on the wall. Joe Biden’s incoherent moments during the debate seem to have triggered a frenzy, with some media figures practically begging him to step aside.
MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski took to her soapbox, railing against the “screaming, mocking, jeering” headlines calling for Biden’s exit. Her emotional 15-minute monologue was either a heartfelt plea or the funeral dirge for a campaign in crisis, depending on one’s perspective. Her posture was a desperate attempt to shield Biden from reality, insisting his faltering debate performance was merely the fault of his overzealous staff.

Predictably, some of Biden’s media protectors tried to shift the focus back to Trump. Scarborough’s absence on “Morning Joe” felt like a staged break, suspiciously timed so his wife could mount Biden’s defense solo. Scarborough had earlier insinuated that any Fortune 500 CEO performing like Biden would be shown the door—cue the awkward family dinner conversations.
The New York Times, usually Biden’s PR branch, advised him to do the “honorable” thing and step down. Columnists from across the liberal media landscape piled on, with some suggesting that Kamala Harris might be a better lead for the ticket. The tide of liberal opinion seems to have reached a consensus that the Democratic ship is sinking, and it’s all hands on deck to find a lifeboat.
Whipple, who literally wrote the book on Biden’s presidency, predicted that these editorials wouldn’t sway the White House. Biden’s team has been critical of how much space the media has devoted to his voter-base’s dread over his age and diminishing capabilities. Whipple suggested that nothing will make Biden more determined to run than a New York Times op-ed telling him to quit—perhaps Biden sees every criticism as a challenge.
The Philadelphia Inquirer is one of the few outliers defending the president. In their view, Trump is the real disaster that needs expulsion from the political stage. However, this attempt to deflect the spotlight from Biden’s blunders isn’t fooling anyone.
As Biden’s campaign careens toward what some might call an inevitable implosion, it’s clear he has little intention of going quietly into the night. Biden’s stubborn refusal to recognize his own limitations only underscores the Democrats’ existential crisis. For conservatives, pop some popcorn and enjoy the show.
