The recent images from the European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter may have caused some initial excitement as people thought they saw spiders on Mars, but fear not, there are no spiders from Mars. These so-called “spiders” are actually just natural formations caused by the interaction of sunlight with carbon dioxide ice on the planet’s surface. It’s important not to jump to conclusions and let our imaginations run wild.

The ESA clarified that these dark features resembling spiders are the result of gas bursting through thick ice deposits on Mars, creating geysers of dust that settle on the surface.
