McCarthy Blocks Dems’ Ukraine Aid, Demands Transparency

The liberal Senate’s latest push for aid to Ukraine may be going nowhere fast. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is making it clear that he won’t support the supplemental aid package, saying that it’s not going to circumvent the process that House Republicans have in place to provide foreign aid. The Speaker told Punchbowl News that if Senate Democrats think they are going to write a supplemental aid package because they want to go around some agreement made by the House, they should think again.

McCarthy’s stance could signal a tough road through Congress when President Joe Biden next asks for additional funds for Ukraine. It should come as no surprise that the Speaker is looking for more transparency and accountability when it comes to aid to Ukraine. After all, billions of dollars in aid have already been sent to the war-torn country with little to show for it.

Republicans are concerned about the lack of accountability for the money being spent. The latest push for aid to Ukraine, which will require more detail and transparency, is sure to get Republican attention. While Republicans remain committed to supporting Ukraine, they are not going to throw money at the problem without more clarity on how it will be spent.

Despite McCarthy’s objections to the latest supplemental aid package, GOP senators are moving forward with the proposal. Republican Whip John Thune told CNN that he expects plenty of collaboration and coordination to make sure that the aid package enjoys broad support. McCarthy’s position does not mean that Republicans will stop supporting Ukraine, but the funding will now require more details before it can receive support from the Speaker and his colleagues in the House.

The Senate may be taking the lead on this issue, but it’s up to the House to ensure transparency and accountability. The American people have a right to know where their tax dollars are going, especially when it comes to foreign aid. McCarthy and his colleagues are determined to bring much-needed reform to the foreign aid process and ensure that every dollar being spent is being used effectively. It’s time for the Senate to recognize that and work with House Republicans to help the Ukrainian government.
