Last week, Fargo, North Dakota narrowly escaped a terrorist attack, but not without tragic consequences. As the city officers were looking into a routine car crash, they were suddenly ambushed by a man named Mohamad Barakat. Armed with a rifle and a staggering 2,000 rounds of ammunition, Barakat unleashed his deadly firepower on the unsuspecting officers: Jake Wallin, Andrew Dotas, and Tyler Hawes.

The officers had no chance to defend themselves, as Barakat opened fire from a distance of 15 to 20 feet away. Tragically, Officer Wallin lost his life, while Dotas and Hawes suffered serious injuries. It has come to light that Barakat, originally from Syria, was granted asylum in 2012 and became a full citizen in 2019. This shocking revelation raises serious concerns about the vetting process for immigrants and the potential threats they may pose to our country.

North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley addressed the situation, acknowledging that Barakat’s background investigation did not raise any red flags prior to the attack. However, Wrigley did mention a Guardian report on Barakat, which hints at some concerning details about his past. While the report does not indicate any specific threat of violence, it is disconcerting that such information was not taken more seriously.
The investigation into Barakat’s car revealed a chilling arsenal of weapons and explosives. Alongside the rifle and thousands of rounds of ammo, police discovered three long guns, four handguns, multiple ammo magazines, canisters filled with gasoline, and even a homemade hand grenade. These findings suggest that Barakat had larger plans in mind, possibly targeting another area of Fargo before encountering the officers.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present danger our law enforcement officers face and the importance of thorough background checks for individuals entering our country. We cannot afford to overlook potential threats, especially when lives are at stake. It is crucial that we reassess our immigration policies and prioritize the safety and well-being of American citizens above all else.
