Walz seemed to channel the spirit of the late-night infomercial pitches, claiming Harris’ border policies are not just strong, but the strongest ever. He insisted that Donald Trump had somehow dropped the ball by not passing a border security bill, conveniently ignoring the fact that Democrats had a role in the legislative logjam. Going on to accuse Republicans of crafting “stories” about illegal immigration and pet-eating criminals—no, this is not the plot of a horror movie—Walz seemed to suggest that the concerns of ordinary Americans could simply be dismissed as fairy tales. He referenced Springfield, lamenting that the alleged incidents were not happening there, as if anecdotes from flyover country don’t count in the grand narrative of border policy.
Walz’s comments take on an even more surreal tone when one considers Harris’ own attempts to remodel her role in the Biden administration. While some left-leaning outlets scramble to distance her from the “border czar” title, claiming her focus was aimed at tackling the “root causes” of migration, it can be hard not to see this as a desperate PR move amidst a chaotic border crisis.
